Doing something Different - and loving it!

A chance meeting with Peter McEwan, the Eastern Melbourne Region Franchisor for Jim's Floors, was all that was needed to give Rodger Mugridge the courage to take the plunge and do something different.

"I am 45 and had been involved in the computer industry for 26 years in various roles from programmer, support analyst, team leader to managing a software house," Rodger relates. "Along the road I had changed jobs regularly looking for the ultimate challenge and by the time I got there and managed a team of 80 I started to wonder if that was what I really wanted.

"Retrenchment gave me the opportunity to review where I was and where I wanted to go with my life. I had always had a dream of working for myself so now was the time to have a look around and see what was available. I looked at various business opportunities and then investigated some franchises."

"My chance meeting with Peter answered some of the many questions that were on my mind - could I run a business? Could I do the work? Would I be able to survive financially? Could I afford to get into a franchise? The answers were all positive. "As a result of the conversation I arranged to go out to work for a couple of days with Peter and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I spoke to other franchisees and all feedback was very positive, so after consulting with an accountant I decided to take the plunge and bought the Glen Waverly territory.

"Training was provided with a number of floor sanders in the group and while this was happening I was setting up my business in the background. When the training was finished I hit the floor running and have had plenty of work ever since." "Peter had provided me with approximate figures on what could be expected on the financial side of things - which proved to be very close to the mark - so I sat down and devised a financial plan for the following 12 months. To my great delight I have over achieved on every financial goal that I set."

"From my point of view the main advantages of my franchise is the support that I get from fellow franchisees and the regional franchisors and the 'company name' that is well-known throughout the community and greatly assists in providing work if required. I have found that my reliance on Jim's to provide work for me is decreasing and referrals from successful jobs are on the increase."

"The financial rewards from this business are completely up to me. The work is there for me to work seven days a week but I choose to stick to my five days a week, occasionally working on weekends to meet customer requirements."

"As for the future, it is not absolutely clear to me at the moment. I am enjoying the new experience of working without a boss and without employees and having complete control of my time, but the potential to go further is available to me. I will probably look at purchasing a region and becoming a franchisor in the future."

"The change of careers has been fantastic for me. The franchise with Jim's has allowed me to make that change with the minimum of stress. If has provided me with a career that is rewarding both in the work that I do and the financial returns. I do not think that I could have achieved this without the great support that the franchise group provides."
